WEEK 18 ( 26th August - 31st August)

MONDAY

On Monday we had an away game in the Halesworth-3-wiid league against Lowestoft Railway. A good game was had, Wenhaston drew on two rinks, won on one rink and lost on one so we came away with a loss of 5-2.

WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday we had our last league game in the Sax league and it was at home against Laxfield. Wenhaston had a great game which led to a 6-1 win. This confirmed us for a 3rd place league table finish, annoyingly only 1 point away from being 2nd again.

THURSDAY

On Thursday we headed to Leiston to play Peasenhall in the Sax League KO Cup Final. It was a bit nip and tuck in the first half of the game on 3 rinks, with Wenhaston gaining a comfortable lead on the 4th rink. However in the second half of the game Wenhaston came on form and we ended up winning on all 4 rinks with a score of 105-56 shots.

FRIDAY

On Friday was the last game in the Halesworth-3-wood league and it was at home against Beccles town. Wenhaston won 5.5 points to 1.5.

A great win for yourselves and Wenhaston!

NOTICE

It was announced to members on 19th May at the beginning of the Aussie Pairs competition that we had heard the sad news that Brian Munro had sadly lost his battle with cancer and had passed away. A minutes silence was held in respect. We have not yet been told any funeral plans, but when the club hears of them, Jake will inform all members.

MONDAY

Wink and the sax league team were away to Laxfield. A very tough game as always over there, unfortunately Wenhaston won on only one rink resulting in a 6-1 defeat with 99 shots to 65.

TUESDAY

Chris and the Lowestoft league team were playing their second game of the season away at Lowestoft railway. A great game for Wenhaston winning 7-0 with a score of 85 shots to 63.

SUNDAY

This was our third annual Aussie Pairs tournament in memory of our dear friend Dick Clarke. This year Chris Peck ran the tournamnet with help from Tom Daly. Chris even sponsored the prize money himself so we were able to donate more money to charity. 8 teams of pairs took to the green for three games of 8 ends. Most of these games were close and all of them were enjoyable. To make the final two teams who had the same points and shot difference had to battle out it via a sudden death end for a place in the final. The final two pairs were Carl Vincent & Fred Keen and Chris Peck and Tom Daly. A very close final however Chris and Tom became champions. Dick's wife Jill and her son Dale were in attendance and Jill lead the presentation. Pictures can be found on the gallery page. We were able to raise and donate £95.00 to Cancer Research.

WEEK 2 (6th May - 10th May)

THURSDAY

Chris Peck and the team were away to Aldeby for the first game in the Lowestoft league. Going into the game we knew it would be tricky, as it always is at their green. Nontheless we gave it our best. Drawing on two rinks, winning on one and losing on one. End score being 67 shots to 64 gave us a 5-2 defeat.

FRIDAY

David Hambling and the team were away to Thurlton in the first round of the Senior cup. Some good games were played all round however Thurlton won overall with 100 shots to 47. For us the Senior Cup run is over for this season.

NEXT WEEK

Next week Wink and the Sax league team are away to Laxfield on Monday in which will be a tough fixture. On Tuesday Chris and the lowestoft leage team are away to Lowestoft Railway and on Sunday we will be holding our annual Dick Clarke Memorial Sheild Austrailian Pairs Competition. Kick off at 9.30am.

WEEK 1 (28th April - 3rd May)

SUNDAY

Members of Wenhaston Bowls Club recently had a shock when one of their local members Brian Munro informed them he had terminal cancer.

The Chairwoman, Vice Chair and Secretary visited him and he surprised them by saying he had bought a trophy which he would like Wenhaston bowlers to play for. He has called it the Brian Munro Cancer trophy. This trophy was played for on Sunday 28 April. It is a 3 wood pairs competition and 16 members (8 teams) took part. It was a most enjoyable day, played in good spirits and included tea, coffee and a bacon roll which is exactly how Brian would have enjoyed playing his bowls. He was hoping to attend and present the trophy, unfortunately, that day he was not well enough.

After a round robin of 3 ends the top 2 teams ended up in a final between John Robinson and Jim Boggis against James Cantrell and Ray Heater. It was a very close fought encounter won by James and Ray (president of the club) by 6 shots to 4. As President Ray was one of the winners the trophy was presented on behalf of Brian by the club chairwoman Jen Daly.

The proceeds from the day will be forwarded to Cancer research and all members of the club send their warmest love and special wishes to Brian

MONDAY

Well, what can I say. A strong start to the Saxmundham and District Season. Wink and the team achieved a 6-1 victory with 100 shots to 57. 100 shots doesn't come too often in a bowls game, one rink alone racked up an incredible 40 shots, only allowing 4 against. Well done to all. No game next week as it's a bank holiday but Wink and the sax league team will be out in full force on 13th away to Laxfeild. This will no doubly be tougher match.

FRIDAY

This was the first cup match of the season and it was in the Halesworth-3-wood league, lead by Elaine Peck. This was a half home, half away game against Lowestoft Railway A. Wenhaston secured a win overall with the team at home home winning 36 to 25 and the team away losing with 30 to 34. Meaning Wenhaston won by 7 shots. Well done to Elaine and the team!

NEXT WEEK

Next week there is no game in the Sax League as it is Bank Holiday, Chris Peck starts the season with an away match to Aldeby on Thursday 9th and David Hambling and the team will play the first fixture in the Senior Cup away at Thurlton on Friday 10th!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2023 SEASON

WEEK 18 (28th August - 2nd September 2023)

This is the final weekly report of this season. I would like to take this opportunity to
thank you for reading the reports and for the nice comments I have received. It is
has obviously a good thing to add to our web page and I hope it will continue next
season.

TUESDAY.
The final Lowestoft league game was away to Kensington Gardens and a good
victory to end the season. We won by 82 shots to 67 and by 6 points to 1. This
ensures that once again we have won this league. Well done to Chris and all those
who took part.

WEDNESDAY.
The penultimate game of the Saxmundham league and our final home match. We
were at home to Laxfield, the strongest team in the league and so it proved again.
Laxfield won 3 of the 4 rinks and by 73 shots to 61 giving them a resounding 6-1
win. Laxfield once again are the league winners and tomorrow will decide who will
be runners up.

THURSDAY.
The final games of our Saxmundham league. We were away to Leiston and our
closest rivals Dennington (2 points ahead of us) were away to Laxfield. It is
amazing that after 12 games it comes down to these games results to decide who
will be runners up. What a finish this was. Leiston won 3 of the 4 rinks against us
but we triumphed by 1 solitary shot (56-55) which means we won overall by 4
points to 3. It was then a nailbiting wait and an hour later the Laxfield result was
phoned to me and Laxfield beat Dennington by 5.5 points to 1.5. That means we
ended the season in second place in the league by half a point. That half point was
important as if it had ended as a draw on points Dennington would have been
second on shots difference. Well done Wink and all who took part throughout the
season.

LEAGUES.
The updated league tables will be on the web page and we have had a splendid
outdoor season. Of the 4 leagues we compete in we had two firsts, one runner up
and one in 4 th place. Well done to all players, captains and let us not forget the
supporters who came along.

FRIDAY.
On Friday night at Leiston was the first of the Saxmundham League individual
competitions. David Hambling was in the 4 bowl singles final against Alan Chenery
of Earl Soham. It was an excellent game and David won 21-20.

SATURDAY.
David and Jennie Hambling were in the Over 60’s 3 wood pairs against Jen Daly
and Pat Gilbert. This went down to the final end and the Hamblings won 15-14.

Later that day the same pairs faced each other in the 2 wood pairs and again this
went to the final end and the Hamblings won 21-19

The Saxmundham League Individual competitions were a huge success and our
congratulations to Elain Peck who was the competition Secretary and to all the
Wenhaston players who took part.

That’s it folks for the season. The carpet bowls start again on 7 September at 7 pm
in Wenhaston Village Hall. My thanks to Jake for updating the web site with these
reports, photographs and the league tables.

WEEK 17 (20th-25th August 2023)

As I mentioned in last weeks report there are no matches this week but we have
several Wenhaston players at Skegness so I will give a rough breakdown of the
games.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY.
The Donald Steward team lost to Humberside by 23 shots but the Jubilee Vase
team beat Lincolnshire by 38 shots. So well done to the ladies a) for getting there
and b) for competing so well.

Chris, Elaine and Kim were in the open triples. There were 4 teams who won all 4
matches but the Wenhaston lot triumphed on shots. Well done to the three.
Incidentally the other 3 teams who also won 4 games were all from Norfolk so it
was a good competition from the East Anglian clubs.

MONDAY.
Elaine was playing her 4 wood singles as county champion. She was up against a
team from North Cambs and lost 21-10. Hard luck Elaine but you competed very
well.

TUESDAY.
Chris and Elaine were in the senior mixed pairs and in the 1 st round were up against
a team from Cleveland and they won 17-11.

WEDNESDAY.
Chris and Elaine were now facing a Norfolk pair in Round 2 who apparently were a
formidable pair. Chris and Elaine lost this match by 17-11. Well done to the Pecks
for putting up a good show.

NEXT WEEK.
On Tuesday the Lowestoft league team are away to Kensington Gardens. On
Wednesday the Saxmundham League are at home to Laxfield with a 6.15 pm start.
This is our last home match and then we have 1 more game to finish the season
and that is away to Leiston on Thursday. The results of these last 2 games will
determine whether we finish 2 nd or 3 rd in the league as it also depends on how well
Dennington do. As it stands Dennington have 1 game to play at Laxfield (also on
Thursday) and they are 3 points ahead of us. So a good performance in these last
2 games could see us being runners up. Go for it Wenhaston.
On Friday and Saturday it is the Saxmundham League competition finals and is
being hosted by Leiston B.C. On Friday at 6 pm David Hambling is in the singles
against Alan Chenery of Earl Soham. On Saturday morning the over 60’s 3 wood
pairs is between David and Jennie Hambling against Jen Daly and Pat Gilbert and
after a short break the same pairs meet again this time in the 2 wood pairs. If club
members can make it along to Leiston to support their colleagues then they will be
very welcome. I will give the results in next weeks report.

Club members who reach the finals of the five Sax league competitions and
winners and runners up in the Presidents Plate in September all get points for their
clubs and the club with the overall highest points score receives the Victor Ludorum
cup. Wenhaston are in a good position to win this cup. I emphasise how well our 4
league teams and our individual players have done this season and we should all
be rightly proud of them.

WEEK 16 (13th - 18th August 2023)

SUNDAY.
This was the day of our annual August Tournament. We had a record breaking 32
teams booked but unfortunately 1 team had to call off the night before. Still it meant
93 bowlers were playing. The green was playing very well, the overhead conditions
were good and lots of our visiting players were saying they would come back again
because the green was very good to play on and the competition was well run.
That augurs well for next year.
This game could not go ahead without Wenhaston members and their families
helping out. From preparing the green, setting up the equipment, administration,
supplying the food and drink, selling raffle tickets, clearing up after the tournament
finished, the PA system, dealing with the BBQ etc etc etc. A hearty well done to
one and all.
There were lots of non bowlers there spectating and I reckon we had at least 120
persons in our club that day.
The tournament winners were Malcolm Napthine (Wenhaston), Peter Hurren
(Blundeston) and Ray Neal (Aldeby) who collected £150. Runners up were Barry
Hopper, June Hopper and Richard Mattinson all from Fressingfield who won £75.
In 3 rd place it was Alan Buck (Oulton Broad), Terry Buck and Steve Louden
(Bungay) and they won £60. The 4 th place went to David Cattermole, Roger Ward
and Les Ruth from Stradbroke White Hart. Congratulations to all of them.
As for how well we did financially will be revealed at the club AGM on 20
September.

MONDAY.
The Saxmundham league team were away to Dennington. They won 2 rinks each
but Dennington won 78 shots to 57 and a 5 points to 2 victory. Both Dennington
and Wenhaston have 2 games left to play and currently we are 3 points ahead of
them. To ensure 2 nd place in the league we need good results against Leiston and
Laxfield.

TUESDAY.
The Lowestoft league team were away to Kessingland. Again it was a case that
each team won 2 rinks each but this time Wenhaston were the shot winners by 85
to 61 giving us a 5 points to 2 victory. Well done team.

NEXT WEEK.
There are no league games next week so the green can have a rest and so can we.

WEEK 15 (7th - 11th August 2023)

MONDAY.
The Saxmundham league were playing our only home match this week and it was
against Aldeburgh. All 4 rinks won and the shots score was 92-69 with a very good
7 points to 0 win. Well done team.

TUESDAY.
The Lowestoft league were away to Lowestoft Railway. You might say “Where
else” as we are there that often. We won by 2 shots and a very good 5-2 win on
points which keeps us top of the league. Well done team.
The Halesworth 3 wood league have 2 games to play to finish the season and both
are away from home. It is going to be a very tight finish to the season and 2 tough
matches to play so we wish Elaine and her team all the very best. So results of
both games to follow.

THURSDAY.
Wenhaston away at Beccles. This is the penultimate game of the HW3 league and
Wenhaston won by 76 shots to 54 and by 6 points to 1. So that score rules Beccles
out of the race for the league and a win tomorrow will see Wenhaston being league
winners.

FRIDAY.
The final match and it is away to Earsham. This is a tricky green and so it proved
with Earsham winning by 3 shots (61-58), The points score was 5-2 to Earsham.
The only team with games in hand that could top us was Lowestoft Railway and
they have failed to get enough shots so Wenhaston win the League. Well done
Elaine

NEXT WEEK.
There will be a report on the August Tournament
The only 2 leagues to finish the season are the Saxmundham League and the
Lowestoft league. On Monday the Sax league are away to Dennington and on
Tuesday the Lowestoft league are away to Kessingland

WEEK 14 (30th July - 4th August 2023)

SUNDAY.
Unusual to start the weekly report on a Sunday. Today was the semi final of the
Halesworth 3 wood league cup against Earsham playing 2 home and 2 away. The
away team found the green at Earsham very heavy and they lost by 7 shots overall.
The home team were outplayed by a good Earsham team and against 2 very good
skips. Wenhaston lost by 18 shots so that was an overall loss of 25 shots. Not to
worry there is always next year.

MONDAY.
In the Saxmundham League we were away to the team bottom of the league
Yoxford so we were hoping for a positive result. A positive result we did get. We
won 3 of the 4 rinks with the shots being 86 to 62 and a points win of 6-1. Well
done team

TUESDAY.
The Lowestoft league had a rearranged game against Sparrows Nest at their
ground and as we have experienced before it is a poor surface. However our team
overcame these difficulties, won by 89 shots to 51 and a points score of 7-0, Still
top of the league and doing well.

FRIDAY.
On Friday the Halesworth 3 wood league were at home to Thurlton. What a game
this was. Wenhaston were always 3 rinks up but Thurlton kept coming back at
them. With 2 ends to go the shots score was even but Wenhaston showed their
staying power in the last 2 ends and in the last end all 4 rinks were won by
Wenhaston and they ended up 80 shots to 67 winners. The points score was a
very good 6-1 win and we remain top of the league. Well done Team.

NEXT WEEK.
On Monday the Saxmundham league are at home to Aldeburgh, on Tuesday the
Lowestoft league are away to Lowestoft Railway and then the Halesworth 3 wood
league have 2 games in 2 days. On Thursday they are away to Beccles Town and
on Friday they are away to Earsham. The week then finishes on a high on Sunday
13 th when it is our annual tournament and we have a full house. 32 teams, 96
bowlers plus visitors. Anybody able to come along will be most welcome

WEEK 13 (24th - 29th July)

As usual I like to start with the good news. Elaine played in her BE 4 wood singles
final at Thurlton against Julie Spice. Unfortunately she lost but she still qualifies for
the National Finals at Leamington. Later that same day at Ipswich and District
Elaine and Chris played in the EBF senior mixed pairs final and they won. They
were 7-1 down early on and they changed positions with Elaine going as skip. This
started a remarkable turn around and they won with 2 ends still to play. This means
that at Skegness Elaine is in the 4 wood singles, the senior mixed pairs with Chris
and also part of the Donald Steward Suffolk team. She also has the problem of a
dates clash with Leamington to sort out. So it is huge congratulations to the Pecks
for their achievement. With both Suffolk ladies teams also qualifying that also
means Paula, Lesley A and Lesley D will also be there. One more addition is that
our member Kim Dyer qualified as the Veteran Singles champion albeit he was
representing Thurlton. One last item on a sad note is that the funeral of our
beloved President Eve Peck took place at Metfield On Friday. The club was
represented at the funeral by several of our members.

MONDAY.
We were at Laxfield to play the Knock Out Cup semi final. Laxfield are a very good
team but unfortunately that cannot be said of their green and although our team
tried their best we lost on all 4 rinks. As a spectator I was glad I was not playing on
that surface. So Laxfield go into the final having beaten us by 103 shots to 69.
Hard luck team and it is a pity that we were not drawn at home where it might have
been a closer game.

WEDNESDAY.
The BE team were playing another of the front runners Thurlton’A’ Unfortunately
we lost by 6 points to 1. It has been a tough season for Malcolm. Jake will update
the league table on the web page.

THURSDAY.
The Lowestoft League team were at home to Aldeby. Now Aldeby is a small and
difficult green to play on (and we usually lose) but when it is at home as it was
today I noticed that our leads were playing long jacks and this time the Aldeby team
struggled. It was a massive win for Chris’s team by 114 shots to 48 which means
the shots difference was more than the Aldeby team scored. I also believe that this
was the highest shots ‘for’ score any of our teams have managed this season. The
points score was 7-0 in our favour Well done team.

FRIDAY.
Yet another trip to our old rivals Lowestoft Railway this time in the Halesworth 3
wood league. As far as shots were concerned it was very close. We won by 64 to
62 but its points that count and we won that too. This time by 5.5 to 1.5. Well done
Elaine and her team.

SATURDAY.

Today we hosted the Ellen Mathews final games. At 10am it was Area ‘A’ v Area ‘C’
for 3 rd /4 th Place. Area ‘A’ is our area and Wenhaston had 2 players in that team and
that was India Bell and Jen Daly A very good game played in good spirits and Area
‘A’ triumphed with the rink Jen was on being highest up and getting the thimbles.

NEXT WEEK.
On Sunday it is the Halesworth 3 wood league semi finals with Wenhaston up
against Earsham. This is a shots only game and played with 2 teams at home and
2 away.

On Monday the Saxmundham league are away at Yoxford, on Tuesday the
Lowestoft league are away to Sparrows Nest and on Friday the Halesworth 3 wood
league are at home to Thurlton. A bit quieter than this week.

WEEK 12 (17th -21st July 2023)

I start off with some good news. In the County games both the ladies teams , the
Donald Steward and the Jubilee Vase have qualified for Skegness as champions in
their respective leagues. Well done ladies.

MONDAY.
The Saxmundham League game was at home to Stradbroke. Initially it was a close
game and around the half way stage Stradbroke were winning on 2 rinks. However
the Wenhaston team showed their fighting spirit and at the end of the day we only
lost 1 rink and that was only by 1 shot. The overall shots was 84 to 57 in our favour
and a win by 6 points to 1. This keeps us in 2 nd place in the league and the updated
league table is on the web site. Well done to Wink and his team.

TUESDAY.
Another home match and it was in the Lowestoft league against Blundeston. A
comfortable victory for Wenhaston by 89 shots to 61 and a 6 points to 1 win. Well
done Chris and his team on another good score.

WEDNESDAY.
This was a rearranged B E match away to Beccles Town. Beccles are one of the
front runners to win the league and the result was no more than we really expected.
Beccles won all rinks with a shots score of 90 to 64 and their points victory was 6-0.

THURSDAY.
Today was the Humphrey Cup and we were drawn against our old rivals Lowestoft
Railway. This was a 2 home and 2 away game and only shots count.` It was a
reasonably close encounter and played in the best of spirits. The away teams
ended in a win for Lowestoft Rail by 7 shots, the home teams ended in a win for
Lowestoft Rail by 5 shots. The overall shots score was a win for Lowestoft Rail by
71 to 59. Hard luck team, you did your best.

FRIDAY.
We ended the week with a home match in the Halesworth 3 wood league against
Bungay. This was another comfortable win for Elaine’s team with the 4 rinks
winning by 20, 15, 13 and 13 shots and an overall total of 97 shots to 36 which
resulted in a good 7-0 points win. Poor Bungay. They played well and are good
company but on this occasion they were outplayed.

NEXT WEEK.
On Monday we are away to Laxfield in the semi final of the Saxmundham League
Knock Out Cup. Another difficult match in prospect. On Wednesday the BE team
are at home to Thurlton ‘A’. On Thursday the Lowestoft league (which is normally a
Tuesday) are at home to Aldeby and on Friday the Halesworth 3 wood league are
away to Lowestoft Railway. It is almost like Lowestoft is our 2 nd home we play there
so many times.

On Saturday we are hosting the Ellen Matthews final games. The 3 rd /4 th place is at
10 am and the final is at 2 pm. Spectators are welcome. Our area, Area ‘A’, are on
at 10 am

WEEK 11 (10th -14th July 2023)

Before we report on the league matches this week I will give you an update on the
SCWBA semi finals and finals which we hosted on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July.
The Saturday was a very hot day and there were lots of spectators. 17 members
turned up to help on the day with everything being set up in the club house, in the
pavilion, in the Marquee and the green was cut by David and John at 0730 (on both
days). The members (and some of their families) purchased, served and sold food
and drink that was available and my thanks to all those who contributed to this.
What a spread. It was truly magnificent. On the semi finals day Elaine won the 4
wood singles 21-13 but India lost her under 25 game and Lesley Dyer (playing for
Blundeston with Sue Rochard) lost her pairs.

On Finals day we had a couple of spells with heavy rain but the matches played on.
Our only club representative was Elaine who won her final 21-8. She is now the
County 4 wood singles champion and goes forward to Skegness to represent
Suffolk in the national finals in August. The whole club sends her congratulations
and best wishes at Skegness. Our set up for the 2 days was highly praised by the
SCWBA officials. Well done Wenhaston.
The Victor Ludorum trophy which is given to the area that gains most points over
the season was awarded to Area ‘A’ which should have been given to Mel Dyer as
she would have been President this year. Lesley Dyer accepted the trophy on her
behalf. A fitting tribute.

TUESDAY.
A home match for Chris’s Lowestoft league team against Sparrows Nest. This
ended up with as comfortable a win as you can possibly ask for. Sparrows Nest
team were very nice people but they couldn’t cope with our green and the shots
score was 102 to 43 in our favour and a good 7 points to 0 victory. Well done Chris.

WEDNESDAY.
Another tough one for Malcolm’s BE team playing away to Thurlton ‘A’. However it
was not as bad as some were expecting and they drew 2 all on rink wins. However
Thurlton edged it on shots by 75 to 54 and ended up with a 4 points to 2 victory. A
valiant attempt from Wenhaston.

FRIDAY.
Today it rained. It then rained a little more. So much so the green at Beccles Town
was unplayable and the HW3 game had to be postponed. Another rearranged
game to look forward to.

NEXT WEEK.
On Monday the Saxmundham League are at home to Stradbroke. On Tuesday the
Lowestoft league are at home to Blundeston. No game on Wednesday and on
Thursday we have the Humphrey Cup against Lowestoft Railway which is 2 teams
at home and 2 away. Finally on Friday the Halesworth 3 wood league are at home
to Bungay.

WEEK 10 (3rd - 7th JULY 2023)

MONDAY.
This was always going to be really tough match. We were at Laxfield who are the
current league leaders and they have won this league in the last 5 seasons. We
gave it a good go on what was a difficult green and Laxfield ended up winning 2
rinks, we won 1 and drew one. We lost 60-94 on shots and the points score was a
win for Laxfield by 5.5 to 1.5. We are going up against Laxfield on their green on 21
July in the Knock out Cup semi final so we can have another go at them. In the
league we are still in second place, 8 points behind Laxfield.

TUESDAY.
Today we visited the village of Somerleyton which is a very small green, probably
one of the smallest greens in the county and as I have said before I have a bigger
duvet at home. However on the plus side they are lovely people and it is a pleasure
to play against them.
It started off tricky in the rain and soon they were up on 3 rinks but once our team
got used to the runs and the weight we soon took the lead on all 4 rinks and that
was how it ended. We won by 88 shots to 60 and 7 points to 0. Well done Chris
and team for another splendid result.

WEDNESDAY.
Our 3 rd away game in a row and Malcolm’s BE team were off to Thurlton to play
their ‘B’ team. This was a very close, hard fought game and both teams won 2
rinks. It came down to the shots difference and Thurlton ‘B’ edged it by 66 shots to
64. The overall result was a 4 points to 2 win for Thurlton.

FRIDAY.
Our only home game this week and it was Elaine’s Halesworth 3 wood team
against Earsham. Earsham had some good players and put up a very good fight
and in fact at one stage they were 3 rinks up. However about the half way stage
and after some positional changes we started to pull away and we ended up
winning 3 of the 4 rinks and by 79 shots to 50. The end result was a good 6-1 win
on points. Well done Elaine

NEXT WEEK.
The Saxmundham league were due to play Leiston on Monday but this has been
postponed due to Leiston playing a cup final that day. On Tuesday the Lowestoft
league are at home to Sparrows Nest. On Wednesday the BE league team are at
Thurlton again this time to face their ‘A’ team and finally on Friday the Halesworth 3
wood league team are away to Beccles Town.

As you are aware the SCWBA semi finals and finals were played Saturday 8th and
Sunday 9 th and I will update you on how our ladies fared next week.

WEEK 9 (26th - 30th June 2023)

A very busy week this week with 4 league matches and the knock out cup. The
good thing is that 4 of the matches were at home.

MONDAY.
Wink is away at the moment so David was the team captain of the Saxmundham
league fixture. A baptism of fire we thought playing against one of our main rivals
Dennington. We won 3 of the 4 rinks and on shots it was very close but we
triumphed by 80 shots to 56 giving us a splendid 6 points to 1 win. This means 5
wins out of 5 so far and all the wins were by 6 points to 1.
We are in second place 4 points behind Laxfield, who we play next week, and we
are 8.5 points ahead of 3 rd place Dennington. Well done David and we hope you
continue with a good result next week.

TUESDAY.
Our 2nd home match of the week, this time in the Lowestoft league, and it was
against Kensington Gardens. What a night. Every rink was up for it and we ended
up winning on all 4 rinks and our shots score was 108 to 41 so it’s not rocket
science to know the points score was 7-0. However, I have to say that compared to
Monday night, the opposition were very friendly and gracious in their remarks about
our green. It is not often you get a shots score of over 100 points and this is the
second time in 3 weeks with Wink’s Sax team getting 107 a couple of weeks ago
and now Chris tonight. Well done Chris and well done team.

WEDNESDAY.
Our 3rd home match this week and its Malcolm’s BE team against Beccles Town ‘A’.
They don’t come much tougher and a tough game it was. Beccles won 3 of the 4
rinks and 83 shots to 45 resulting in a 5 points to 1 win. There will be better days
Malcolm.

THURSDAY.
Today we were at home against Sweffling in the Saxmundham league Knock Out
cup. A good competitive match and both teams won 2 rinks. This is based on
shots not points and Wenhaston won by 81 shots to 60. Another good win for the
stand in Captain David. That is us in the semi final and we will face Laxfield at
Laxfield some time before the 7 August.

FRIDAY.
Our only away game this week and this time it was Elaine’s Halesworth 3 wood
league and against Thurlton. Thurlton put out a mixture of senior and junior players
and it was nice to see so many youngsters on the green. We won 3 of the 4 rinks
comfortably be 98 shots to 54 and a very good 6 points to 1. Well done Elaine. It is
well done to all of the team players by winning 4 of the 5 games this week

NEXT WEEK.

3 away games next week. On Monday the Sax league are away to the league
leaders Laxfield, on Tuesday the Lowestoft league are away to Somerleyton, on
Wednesday the BE team are away to Thurlton ‘B’ and finally we get a home match
on Friday in the Halesworth 3 wood league to Earsham.
On Saturday and Sunday we are hosting the SCWBA county semi finals and finals.
This is a big event and we are pulling out all the stops to ensure the players enjoy
our facilities. As well as food available all day Mark Royal is bringing his roadshow
on Saturday. If you can make it along you will be very welcome and we thank all
the members who have volunteered to help out. Wenhaston bowlers will be
represented on the green in the semi finals by Elaine Peck who is in the 4 wood
singles and India Bell who is in the Under 25 singles. Wenhaston bowler Lesley
Dyer will also be on the green albeit she is representing Blundeston in the pairs
along with Sue Rochard. I have not as yet been made aware of the times they are
playing but they will be well supported by our members.

WEEK 8 (19th - 23rd June 2023)

3 games this week and although there is some rain around it is still hot and humid
for the bowlers. Our bowling fraternity are still in shock at the sudden passing of
our President Eve Peck and our thoughts are with her family. On a better note it
was nice to hear from Jake that our numbers of people viewing the web page has
gone up 477% in the past month and a lot of them were viewing for the first time.
Well done Jake.

Monday.
4 wins on the bounce and all with the same score line 6 points to 1. Now that is the
way to start this week’s report. Wink took his Saxmundham team to Aldeburgh.
They usually provide tough opposition on their patch but that said so far this season
they have been struggling a bit and have only won game of the 5 they have played.
Of the 4 rinks we won 3 of them albeit that 2 of them were only by 1 shot. The
shots score at the end was 68 to 65 and that was what gave us the 6 points to 1
scoreline. A very good start to the season for Wink and they currently sit in 2 nd
place 3 points behind Laxfield and 3.5 points ahead of Dennington who we play
next week. After next weeks game we will update the league table.

Wednesday.
A home game this week for Malcolm’s BE team against Beccles Town ‘B’. A
comfortable 3 rinks to 1 win and 81 shots to 51 making it a 5 points to 1 victory.
Well done Malcolm. One game left to report and that is on Friday and we are
hoping for a 3 rd win in a row.

Friday.
The Halesworth 3 wood league at home to Lowestoft Railway. Well, we did it. A
hat trick for Wenhaston. Lowestoft Rail put out a strong team but Elaine’s team
were up for it. We both won 2 rinks but in shots Wenhaston won by 68 shots to 58
giving us an overall victory of 5 points to 2. Well done Elaine.

Next week.
On Monday the Saxmundham league are at home to Dennington, on Tuesday the
Lowestoft league are at home to Kensington Gardens, on Wednesday the BE team
are at home
to Beccles Town ‘A’, on Thursday it is the Sax League Knock out cup at
home to Sweffling and on Friday the HW3 league are away at Thurlton. So, if you
fancy watching a game there are 4 home games available. Another item worth a
mention is that on Saturday Elaine is in the SCWBA Area A finals (singles in her
case) at Kessingland and we wish her all the best.

WEEK 7 (12 - 16th June 2023)

Busy week this week and in the heat as well. Still it is nice to bowl when the
weather is good. So, 4 games to report on this week.

Monday.
Wink’s Saxmundham league were at home to Yoxford. Now Yoxford are struggling
at the foot of the table so a good result was expected. We won comfortably by 3
rinks to 1 and a massive 107 shots to 45. Overall result was a 6 points to 1 win and
this keeps us second in the league 2 points behind Laxfield. Well done Wink.

Tuesday.
Chris’s Lowestoft league was a tougher opposition against Kessingland and again it
was a home match. It was a very close fought game with Kessingland winning 2
rinks, we won 1 rink and the 4 th rink was a draw. What really helped us was the rink
that we won did so by 20 shots so overall we won on shots by 81 to 72. The overall
points resulted in a win for us by 4.5 to 2.5. Well done Chris and your team.

Wednesday.
Malcolm’s BE team were away to Lowestoft Rail and that is never an easy game. It
is part of the game when you are up against good players but it makes it more
difficult when you are playing on a difficult and tricky green. Even some of the
Lowestoft players were saying they were having problems with some of the lines
plus it was a little bumpy. However that’s bowls we have to take the good with the
bad. At the end of the day we won 2 ends each, but lost 64-73 on shots, and as a
result we lost 4-2 on points. Not bad considering who we were against.

Friday.
Elaine’s Halesworth 3 wood league were away to Bungay. Another tough away
fixture which resulted in a narrow defeat. We won 2 rinks, drew 1 and lost one but
Bungay won on the shots score by 63 to our 61. The points result was that we lost
2.5 to 4.5

Next week The Saxmundham league is away at Aldeburgh on Monday, No game
on Tuesday, The BE team are at home to Beccles Town ‘B’ on Wednesday and on
Friday the Halesworth 3 wood league are at home to Lowestoft Railway.

WEEK 6 (5th - 9th June 2023)

3 matches this week so here we go.
Tuesday. Lowestoft League.
We were up against the current league leaders, Lowestoft Railway, so we were
expecting a good close game. A close game is certainly what we got.
As we neared the end of the 21 ends, 3 rinks had finished and there was one rink
left (Chris’s rink) and it was obviou
s that we had won 2 rinks each. It was then
down to the number of shots scored as to who would get the bonus 3 points. At the
end of the penultimate end we were all square on overall shots so one team was
going to win.
With each skip having 1 bowl to play Lowestoft Rail were holding shot. The
Wenhaston skip (James Cantrell) played his final bowl and it was a beauty. He was
now holding shot. The Lowestoft skip played but missed the target and James’s
last bowl won the game. We were victors by 5 points to 2 and the shots score was
69 to 68. What a finish. Well done to Chris as that now puts us equal on points at
the top of the table
Thursday. Halesworth 3 wood league cup tie.
This was against Thurlton and it was 2 teams away and 2 at home with the
combined shots determining the winner. Thurlton always give us strong opposition.
The home team won by 43 shots to 27 and the away team lost by 30 shots to 38
which made the combined score 73 shots to 65 in our favour. So Wenhaston won
by 8 shots. Well done Elaine.
Friday. Halesworth 3 wood league match.
This was the start of the 3 wood league games and we were at home to Beccles
Town. This game was very close and it did go down to the wire. At the end of the
day we won 3 ends of the 4 and won by 66 shots to 61. Overall points score was 6
points to 1 This was a very good team we were against so we can consider this an
excellent win. Well done Elaine and a good victory 2 days in a row.
Next week we have the Saxmundham league at home to Yoxford on Monday, the
Lowestoft league at home to Kessingland ‘A’ on Tuesday, BE league away to
Lowestoft Railway on Wednesday and finally the Halesworth 3 wood league away
to Bungay on Friday. Wow 4 games in the one week.

WEEK 5 (29th May - 2nd June 2023)

A very short report this week as there was only 1 league match played and
unfortunately it was a result we did not want.
Malcolm’s BE team took on Thurlton ‘B’ at home and the visitors won by 73 shots to
55 and winning the game 5-1 on points. Not to worry Malcolm these little ‘blips’
happen and we are sure that the team will march on in the weeks to come.
Next week we only have 2 matches as on Monday Wink’s Saxmundham league
team is resting and on Wednesday Malcolm’s BE team opponents, Thurlton ‘A’,
have postponed their game as due to other commitments they cannot field a team.
On Tuesday Chris’s Lowestoft league team are at home to Lowestoft Railway and
on Friday Elaine’s Halesworth 3 wood team get their league matches underway
with a home match against Beccles Town. Best of luck to both teams.

WEEK 4 (22nd - 26th May 2023)

Well I promised you 3 games this week but it turns out there were only 2 played.
The Wednesday B E game against Beccles ‘A’ was postponed. However here is
the report on the 2 games that went ahead.
Saxmundham League. Monday.
We were away to Stradbroke and had a very comfortable 6-1 win. This is 2 games
in a row now with the same points win. We now have 12 points and a shots score
of 165 against 132. We are currently sitting 2 nd in the table behind Laxfield who
have 14 points and 5 points ahead of Dennington who have a game in hand.
Winks team can now have a 2 week rest as next week it is public holiday Monday
and the following week we are resting. Back on 12 June.
Lowestoft League. Thursday.
Due to the fact that Aldeby do not play the Lowestoft league on a Tuesday we have
to switch this game to a Thursday. Aldeby is one of these greens that very few like
playing on it. It has 4 narrow rinks, a very small green and the green is on a slight
slope, so one direction is faster than the other and, to cap it all, if you go too wide
your bowl could end up off the green. Chris took his team there and they lost 6-1
and by 92 shots to 60. This is his first defeat this season and even he said it was
not unexpected.
Next week there is only 1 game scheduled. PH on Monday so no Saxmundham
league, on Tuesday Chris’s Lowestoft league team is resting, The BE game on
Wednesday is against Thurlton ‘B’ at home and there is a rest week on Friday in the
Halesworth 3 wood league. You never know what we can expect the following
week. 3 Games maybe?

WEEK 3 (14th - 19th May) 2023

At last the weather allows us to get back to playing on the green again and
this week we had 5 games.
On Sunday we had our club Australian Pairs in memory of Dick Clarke.
Some excellent games and an excellent final which ended up being won on
the last end. The winners wer
e David Hambling and Jen Daly and the
runners up were Ian ‘Ginge’ Rogers and Tom Keen and the winning score
was 11-10. Our thanks to Tom Keen who stepped in as a substitute for Ted
Cockaday when he suffered a knee problem at the end of Round 1.
On Monday it was Winks first league game in the Sax League game and
Wenhaston beat Leiston 6-1. The end score did not exactly match the game,
which throughout was very close and Wenhaston edged it 74-67. Well done
Wink. Incidentally our closest rivals in this league, Laxfield and Dennington,
both won 7-0 so it is going to be a hard fought competition again this year.
On Tuesday the Lowestoft League were away at Blundeston. It is now 2 wins
in a trot for Chris. The points score was 5-2 and a healthy shots score of 87
to 59. Well done Chris.
On Wednesday the B E league were away at Beccles playing Beccles Town
‘B’. Another good win for Malcolm’s team. They won 4 points to 2 and 69 -52
on shots. Well done Malcolm. And finally…….
On Friday there was no league match but we hosted the senior cup against
Thurlton under the captaincy of David Hambling. Thurlton had a strong team
out but Wenhaston gave them a run for their money but we unfortunately lost
by 1 shot. 81-82. Hard luck folks.
Next week we have 3 league games and all away from Home. On Monday
the Sax league is at Stradbroke, on Wednesday the B E team are at Beccles
again, this time against Beccles Town ‘A’, and on Thursday the Lowestoft
league are away to Aldeby.
Just a reminder that several of our members are playing county matches. If
you look in the club diary you will find out who is playing and where. If you
can attend to support them it would be much appreciated.

WEEK 2 (8th-12th May) 2023

“The best laid plans of mice and men”. Last week I promised you 3 games
this week but the weather put paid to that and we only managed one game.
The Lowestoft league game was postponed due to the weather and the
Halesworth 3 Wood league Cup was cancelled due to our opposition unable
to field a team.
The only game that went ahead was the B E league and our captain Malcolm
made a good start by beating Lowestoft Railway by 4.5 points to 1.5. It was a
very close game and on shots we won by 63 to 59. In fact Lowestoft were
winning and with 3 ends to go 2 of our teams picked up 4 shots each. Well
done Malcolm and his team.

Next week, again weather permitting we should have 4 games. We start on
Monday and at long last the Saxmundham league gets under way under the
captaincy of Kevin ‘Wink’ Canham. We are at home against Leiston. On
Tuesday the Lowestoft league is away at Blundeston, on Wednesday the B E
league is away to Beccles Town ‘B’ and on Friday we hope the Halesworth 3
Wood league cup will finally start and we are against Thurlton ‘A’ (2 home and
2 away).
Roll on week 3.

WEEK 1 (1st-5th May) 2023

This is the first weekly report on how the club are doing on the green.  The first week was a quiet week with only 1 game played and that was the Lowestoft league where we played Somerleyton at home.  Captain Chris Peck had an excellent start with a 7-0 win and a comfortable 92 to 51 shots.  Well done Chris.

Next week is a lot busier.  On Tuesday the Lowestoft league are away to Sparrows Nest, on Wednesday captain Malcolm Napthine kicks off his campaign in the B E league with a home match against Lowestoft Railway and on Friday captain Elaine Peck kicks off the Halesworth 3 Wood league cup campaign against Aldeby.  This is a 2 home, 2 away game.  Elaine is out to defend her teams title as last years winners of the league cup.

Finally don’t forget it’s the Dick Clarke Aussie Pairs gam
e on Sunday 14 with a 0930 start.

Go Wenhaston Go.
